Afterschool Sewing Classes

Discover the joy of sewing!

Join us weekly to delve into the world of sewing, where each session is a journey of creativity and skill-building. Perfect for ages 10 and above, our small classes ensure personalised attention, with a ratio of approximately six students per instructor. Please note: that due to our limitations with our space at the Tech school, we have opened this class up to include adults.

What You’ll Learn:

Embark on your sewing journey with us! This class is tailored for beginners, covering essential sewing machine operation, safety, project design, and skill development. Progress at your own pace as you craft beginner-friendly projects in a supportive environment.

Prerequisites: No prior experience required! Absolute beginners are warmly welcomed. If you’ve dabbled in sewing before, you’ll still find plenty to learn and enjoy.

When?

Tuesday 4-6pm ~ perfect for level 1 to 2 beginners

• Perfect for those new to sewing or have done our stitch basics class
• You will learn how to set up the machine ready for sewing with matching thread and bobbin
• You will be able to safely operate a sewing machine and associated tools in a way that is ergonomically comfortable.
• Begin to develop basic skills with the relevant tools for sewing, including fabric scissors, pins, rulers, aligning pattern pieces, and marking tools.
• Develop safe use of iron to press projects during construction
• Learn common industry terms and familiarise yourself with common techniques
• Build knowledge around selecting suitable fabrics for your projects
• Developing consistent cutting & sewing operations including; straight lines, corners and curves
• Learn “bagging out” & “turn through” technique
• Learn how to create crisp finished corners
• Begin to develop skills to follow step-by-step instructions to complete projects

Wednesdays 4-6pm ~ Level 2 to 3 beginners and beyond

• Continue developing sewing machine skills to make simple projects
• Continue to develop consistent cutting & sewing operations including; straight lines, corners and curves
• Continue to practice and perfect the technique of bagging out and turning through
• Learn how to make a channel for a drawstring and/or elastic, and thread through drawstring/elastic
• Learn how to attach and sew using a zipper foot
• Learn how to use interfacing
• Able to independently set up tools and resources for making projects
• Understand more complex construction techniques and finishing details
• Developing applique technique
• Begin to learn more stitching techniques
• Continue to develop skills to follow step-by-step instructions to complete projects
• And beyound

We understand that afterschool schedules for young people can be quite busy. If your child is unable to attend on the day best suited to their skill level, don’t worry—we can accommodate them and continue to support their sewing journey. Grouping students by skill level helps our instructors provide focused support and ensure they have the time and energy to guide all students effectively.

What to bring?

You don’t need to bring a thing unless you prefer to learn on your machine. We provide all necessary supplies but feel free to bring your own labeled items if you prefer. We also invite you to bring along any ideas or patterns you’d like to explore together as a group.

We supply reclaimed fabrics and scraps for projects where possible. Students will only be asked to supply materials if we don’t stock required items but you’re also welcome to bring your preferred fabrics. Let your creativity soar as you stitch your way through Term 1 & beyond!

How much?

Weekly payments of $65 or $500 for 10 weeks term

We do NOT offer refunds under any circumstances. All our classes depend on sufficient numbers to run.

Class fees are not transferable to products within the shop

All classes are to be completed in the time frame of the original booking. ie classes can not be carried over to the next term or go towards school holiday classes. If you/participant is sick and can not attend class, please contact Katrina 0421 122 568 or katrina@afittingconnection.com.au by 9am the morning of the class requesting a make-up class. Approved make-up classes are to be made up within the same term as the original booking or will be forfeited.
