Ready to turn up the heat in your sewing skills?
This quick and easy trivet (pot holder) project is the perfect way to protect your surfaces while adding a handmade touch to your home.
Fun Fact: Did you know that trivets date back to ancient times when they were made of iron and used to hold pots over an open flame? Now, you can create one with just a bit of fabric and creativity!
Skill Level: 1 (beginner)
What you need
- 2x 20-25cm squares in main fabric
- 10-12cm ribbon/tape or self rouleau (optional)
- Batting – iron on batting is great

Construction
- Depending on the thickness of your batting you might want 1 layer or 2 layers
- Lay batting on the back of the fabric and cut to size
- If batting is fusible, press to back of the fabric
- Optional loop – fold ribbon/tape in half and place in the centre of one edge on the right side of the fabric
- Place the right sides of the fabric together, and pin the edges.
- Quick tip: for the next step it helps to place 2 pins close together & another set about 5cm apart to indicate where to start and end the “opening”.
- Sew 10mm seam allowance all around leaving 5cm open for turning.
- Clip the corners of the seam alloance to remove bulk
- Turn the trivet right side out, by pulling fabric through the hole. Use a pencil or point turner to ensure the corners are sharpe

Finish off
- Roll seams to the edge and press
- Edge stitch around the whole edge
- Then sew
- Vertical lines evenly spaced along the entire trivet
- or diagonally stitch corner to corner.
