Let’s tie up your sewing skills with this stylish knotted headband!
It’s the perfect accessory to add a pop of flair to any outfit, and it’s easier to make than you might think.
Fun fact: The knotted headband trend dates back to the 1940s, when women wore them as a practical and fashionable way to keep their hair out of their faces while working during World War II!
Skill Level: 1 (beginner)
What you need
- 6-10mm wide elastic will be cut to size as required.
- Using pattern cut 2
Construction
- Fold each in half lengthwise with right sides together, sew 10mm seam allowance along the edge leaving the end open.
- Tip: lay a looped thread along the inside to make it easier to turn inside out
- Turn inside out.
- If you laid the thread, generally pull the thread and encourage the point to pull through
- If you missed the thread, push in the point and continue pushing it through. You may need tweezers to pull it through the opening.
- Roll edges so the seam is along the edge and press.
- Take the pointy ends together and tie a pretty knot.
Finish off
- Fold in the seam allowance in each side of the ends
- Lay the headband on your head and see where it falls in the back to determine how much elastic you need.
- Cut a piece of elastic about 2cm shorter than you think you need. You want the headband to be stretched when worn. Pin the elastic in place and test (be careful not to pin/scratch your head)
- Stitch a couple of times across the edge extra for reinforcement.
